Diary Of A Nigerian Kopa 2

Hi guys, I'm back again.

In continuation from my last post, today I'm going to talk about the major ethnic groups of Benue state and how they differentiate themselves.
The state is populated by several ethnic groups: Tiv, Idoma, Igede, Etulo, Abakpa, Jukun, Hausa, Igbo, Akweya and Nyifon. The Tiv are occupying 14 local government areas with the Etulo and Jukun , with the Idoma, Igede, Igbo, Akweya and Nyifon occupying nine. wikipedia

For the purpose of my limited knowledge I'll be concentrating on the Tiv and Idoma ethnic groups. The Tivs have the largest population in Benue state, hence they form a better part of their government. They are popularly identified with their colour of traditional clothing which is black and white stripes. Anytime you see someone in a black and white striped buba or kaftan in Benue state, you don't need a soothsayer to tell you they're Tiv.

I remember back then in Wannune camp during our three weeks NYSC orientation, we were taught greetings in Tiv language which goes thus... When we're told Udervee, we reply Udervinaa. This is how they say their good morning and that was how we were greeted every morning.
(If you're Tiv and you're reading this, please pardon my spellings and kindly correct me in the comment section 珞) you people should not beat me abeg, I'm just a visitor .

On the other hand, the Idoma people are the second most populated ethnic group. Similar to the Tivs, they also wear black and red striped traditional clothing and ornaments.

In Idoma language, their greeting goes like this... when you are told Nma Ochi, you reply Nma Ochicho ( pardon my spelling once again) This is also how they say good morning in Idoma. Idoma brides are beautiful...(I can relate because I married one...winks).

Benue State symbolises unity, maybe because they are the middle belt. but the state is one place you will see people from different tribes living together as one and it is quite remarkable.

This is where I stop for today. I hope you enjoyed your reading? stay tuned to my next post and don't forget to drop your comments!
